| 2010 Coaching Schedule |
|---|
| Please note that coaching sessions for all age groups i.e. children born in the years 2000 - 2006, will commence at 10:30 a.m. sharp for the summer season. New members are most welcome and remember parents you can enjoy a coffee in the bar or maybe even try out the new dugouts!
The underage club recently held their AGM, where many of the outgoing officers remained unchanged, with Jim Ryng as Chairperson, Caitríona Hynes as Vice-Chairperson, Vincent O’ Sullivan as Secretary and Jim Daly as PRO. Under the guidance of Brian Cuthbert, the club has recently restructured the underage training programme. The new structure was welcomed by all coaches, who are extremely enthusiastic about the programme. To assist in the implementation of this new programme and to adhere to the GAA regulations, Bishopstown GAA Club held a foundation level coaching course recently. All coaches and some senior players attended this course and we had a staggering 65 people in attendance. This is a huge boost for the club and we hope to see all of them lending a helping hand at training sessions throughout the year. Bishopstown GAA Club is conscious of child safety while children are in our care. During the coaching course recently we held a session on code of ethics and dealing with children. We have also introduced a document as a guide to parents, children and coaches on what their roles are in relation to working with the club. Every youth player under the age of 18 will receive this document to be signed by both parents and the player themselves. These forms will be available over the coming week and we would ask that they be returned to the coaches of the relevant teams as soon as possible. It is important to bear in mind that due to new Croke Park regulations, registration must be completed by March 15th to ensure that the player is insured. All new members are welcome and are invited to attend any training session for their relevant age group. Contact Caitríona on 086-3023315 |

| July 11th saw an end to another successful VHI GAA Cul Camp held in Bishopstown GAA Club. With over 160 participants and 18 coaches/assistants there was never a quiet moment in the Club. The staff included many of last years line up with some additions due to the growth in participants. All staff members ( Eolan Ryng, Noel O’ Donovan, Mairín Egan, Conor Luttrel, Brian Murray, Brian Coffey, Diarmuid Lester, Lee Flood, Rhian Nunan, Roger Ryan, Denis Lordan, Brian O Donoghue, David O’ Brien, Frankie Scannell, Niamh O’ Brien, Maeve Scannell, Aisling McDonald and Orla O Connor) are younger members of Bishopstown GAA Club. On the first morning the group of 160 children were broken into nine different groups (done by male and female and then by age) and assigned a dressing room which would be their “home room” for the week. A day would be typically divided into three sessions, and at least one if not two sessions for each group would consist of skill drills each day. This year we were very fortunate to have four Cork Minors working with us; Diarmuid Lester (Football and Hurling), Roger Ryan (Football and Hurling), Brian Murray (Hurling) and Maeve Scannell (Camoige), who were more than willing to share their training drills with the children. When not working on Football and Hurling the groups would play some fun games such as; football rounders, tennis rounders, penalty competitions, world cup soccer, obstacle course, aussie rules football, dodgeball and games such as duck duck goose and cat and mouse for the younger children. When the rain came later in the week the older groups carried out a skills circuit in the indoor sports hall and the younger groups did some art activities in the other hall. It seems now that rain is a definite for our final day in the cul camps in Bishopstown because for the last three years we have been kept indoors on our last day, but never the less it’s possibly still the favoured day of all the participants. Bishopstown are very lucky to have so many players playing with Cork this year and as always they were more than willing to visit the camps to talk to the children. This year the camp was visited by Jamie O’ Sullivan, Ken O’ Halloran and Pa Cronin. Jamie spoke to the children about the importance of training, listening to coaches and about the friendships he has formed through his playing career with the club. He also went on to say that he did not enter the intercounty circle until he was 21 years of age, so no one should give up and think it’s never going to happen because you never know when you’re going to peak! We then had question time with Jamie, Ken, Pa and our four minors, Diarmuid, Brian, Roger and Maeve, where they all answered the questions of the young budding stars. They then presented medals to each participant for taking part in the camp and signed autographs for the children. Sincere thanks to the lads for taking the time to visit the camps once again, we are very proud of their achievements to date and wish them all the best in both club and county championship 2010. The camp was once again jointly co-ordinated by Jim Ryng and Caitríona Hynes who would like to thank the coaches for their hard work, the children for their co-operation especially when the weather didn’t always work with us! A word of thanks also must go to Coiste Oilliúna Chorcaí, in particular to Paudie O Sullivan for their help in organising VHI Cul Camps 2010. We would also like to sincerely thank VHI who once again sponsored the nationwide Cul Camp campaign this year, and we at Bishopstown were delighted when Tommy Hennessy, manager with VHI in Cork City, accepted our invitation to visit the camp. Tommy was welcomed to the club by some of the younger participants and saw first hand how important the sponsorship is to the GAA. | 2010 Rebel Camp | ||||

| On August 9th the Rebel roar came to Bishopstown, when three of our Cork Senior Football and Hurling panellists embarked upon an adventure.....The Rebel Skills Camp. The camp was held in Bishopstown GAA over five days and was organised jointly by Ken O Halloran, Pa Cronin and Jamie O Sullivan. The camp was open to children aged between 9 and 15, there were 30 eager participants, which allowed for a more personal experience for both coaches and attendees. A player profile was created on the first day of each player attending the camp, this then was updated by the coaches on a daily basis and at the end of the week this profile was returned to the participants with details of their fitness testing results and tips on how to improve. This group also had some video analysis completed, a video of each player striking off their left and right side in both football and hurling. This video then was shown to each player on projector in the clubhouse and they were advised by Ken, Pa Jamie, Diarmuid Lester and Máirín Egan on how to improve their technique. Donnacha O Connor visited the camp on Tuesday morning, he kindly took a football session with the oldest group of players, which they really enjoyed and benefited from his vast experience and skill on the playing field. Many thanks to Donnacha for taking the time to come and visit the camp. The camp was also visited by Bishopstown native John Egan, John is currently playing soccer with Sunderland and is doing very well with them. He spoke briefly to each group on the importance of training and ambition. The camp was not all about on the field skill. Nutrition, hydration and mental preparation were also covered with all groups and no better time to focus on it with all six of the coaches involved in club championship around the time of the camp. Every player received a handout with tips on nutrition, hydration and how to prepare before a match. On the final day the younger groups were treated to a bouncing castle, while the older groups continued with their skills development. Each participant also received a Rebel Skills Camp T shirt. The camp was proudly sponsored by Supernova of Ballincollig. Ken, Pa and Jamie would like to thank all who helped and supported them both during the week and beforehand, to Donnacha O Connor and John Egan for their time and Supernova for their kind sponsorship. Credit is also due to Diarmuid Lester, Paul O’ Donoghue and Máirín Egan for working with Ken, Pa and Jamie during the week. A special thanks also goes to the participants who made the week very enjoyable for both coaches and players alike. The lads are already looking forward to organising another Rebel Skills Camp during the Easter Break in 2011 watch this space for more info or www.bishopstowngaa.com | |||||

| The Bishopstown U 10 team got back to action after the summer break with two matches this week. On Monday 7th Sept we played Iniscarra in a hurling match, loosing out in the end of a very competitive match. Some of the boys were a little rusty after the break but showed great committment battling on bravely to the end. On Sat 12th Sept we travelled to Limerick with a squad of 24 players to play in hurling blitz. Our two teams of 12 players played against Limerick clubs Patrickswell, Old Christians, Mungret/StPauls and Waterford clubs Sacred Heart and Tramore. Although winning was not the priority for this inter-county blitz our teams won two games, drew one game and lost out in the other three games. This was a great experience for the boys as it was their first trip away on a bus together as a team and was thoroughly enjoyed by all with everybody recieving a complimentary T Shirt and sliothar. Training continues on Wednesdays from 7 - 8 PM and Saturdays from 10:30 to 12:00. | ||
| Friday 10th July saw the end of another successful term of underage activities in Bishopstown GAA Club. The spring months saw many age-groups partake in a number of blitzes with all teams doing particularly well in their own age-groups and most importantly each team benefited greatly from the match practice. Many thanks to the Games Development Officers of Coiste Oilliúna Chorcaí, who organised the blitzes and the many host clubs who made us very welcome in their clubs. Congratulations to all the teams who participated in the blitzes. On Monday 6th July a group of 130 excited children arrived at Bishopstown GAA Club greeted by 15 equally excited coaches. This was the beginning of the Bishopstown VHI GAA Cúl Camps 2009. This year, unlike last year we had the weather on our side and it helped us immensely. On Monday morning, the children were broken into seven different groups according to ages and each group was assigned their own dressing room, where they meet each morning of the camp. The club employed six coaches; Noel O’ Donovan, Eolan Ryng, Ken O’ Halloran, Mairin Egan, Shane Hayes and Conor Lutteral. With each coach at least one assistant was assigned to the group; Brian Coffey, Brian Murray, Diarmuid Lester, Brian O’ Donoghue, Rhian Nunan, Lee Flood, Aisling McDonald and Ciara Lucey. All coaches and assistants were younger members of Bishopstown GAA Club. The camp was co-ordinated jointly by Jim Ryng and Caitríona Hynes who were present for the week to deal with any issues that may have arisen but thankfully the week ran without any major problems. Jim and Caitríona would like to sincerely thank every coach and assistant for their help, co-operation and flexibility throughout the week, which made their job as supervisors very easy and extremely enjoyable for the attendees. The days were typically broken into three parts, different activities were carried out by each group in each different section. In order to increase the variety, no coach worked with the same group twice in any one day. Each group completed at least one if not two skills session every day in order to improve their hurling and football skills. Fun games such as football rounders, tennis rounders, aussie rules football, indoor soccer, penalty shootouts, dodgeball, obstacle courses and many other fun games for the younger children were also included in the days activities. Our final day was the only day that the weather interfered with our outdoor activities, but it failed to dampen the enthusiasm of either coaches or children. A number of different art activities were completed by the younger boys and girls, while the older groups completed a “skills circuit” competition in the indoor hall. On Friday afternoon, as the day got wetter, we had one last surprise lined up. As a club, we the under-age section, are particularly proud to have not one but many representatives on the various Cork Panels and are very lucky that these representatives are more than willing to lend a hand whenever they are asked. Our coaching line up this year consisted of some past and present Cork players; Noel O’ Donovan, a current Cork Senior Footballer, Diarmuid Lester, a current Cork Minor Hurler and Ken O’ Halloran a former Cork U-21 Footballer and the current Bishopstown Senior Hurling Captain. This year Bishopstown have three representatives on the Cork Senior Hurling Panel; Patrick Cronin, Shane O’ Neill and Ronan Conway. After lunch on Friday these three players made a guest appearance. Shane O’ Neill spoke to the children about his own under-age experience with Bishopstown and explained the importance of listening to coaches and simply practicing at home in the back garden, this statement was backed up by Pa, who told the 130 mesmerised children, that he wasn’t in fact the best hurler on his team coming up the under-age ladder, but he practiced and practiced until he got the skill. Hurling isn’t an easy sport to “pick-up” but with plenty of practice the skill will come, ten-fifteen minutes everyday will make a difference. Before leaving Pa, Shane, Ronan and Noel answered some questions put to them by the children. The stars then politely signed autographs for the star-struck children and presented them with their Certificates and Medals for completion of the camp. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Pa, Shane, Ronan and Noel not only for their help with Cul Camps 2009 but for their continuous willingness to help with all under-age activites throughout the past year. We are extremely proud of their achievements to date and wish them the very best in the All-Ireland Championship 2009, and also congratulations to our very own Senior Footballers who are through to the Semi Final following a win against Dohenys in the Quarter Finals recently. Our thanks are also extended to VHI who sponsor the camps and to the Coiste Oilliuna Chorcaí, in particular Kevin O’ Callaghan and Leigh Desmond for their help and patience in dealing with our many queries in the run up to VHI GAA Cúl Camps 2009. I have left the most important group to thank to the end, not because they are the least important, in fact quite the opposite. Without the co-operation of the Cul Camp Atendees (the children) we could be telling a very different tale today, I cannot praise this group of 130 children enough, their manners, patience and eagerness to learn, allowed the camp to run problem free for the five days, thank you sincerely for your co-operation and also to the parents for your support again not only for the duration of the camp but over the last twelve months. Most underage activities have now stopped for the summer months and will recommence the first week in September, contact the club or the coach in question if you are unsure if your group is finished or not and when they will recommence training. For more details on any underage activities contact the club directly on 021-4545616. |
