Bishopstown GAA club hosted section 3 of Féile Peil na Mumhan Ladies football on Saturday 29th of May in glorious sunshine. The day began with a parade through Cork City, each team wearing their club colours and marching behind their respective banners. From Parnell Bridge up to St. Patrick Street, the pride that these young players had in them and in their clubs was evident to all. Eight teams competed, in two sections, section (A) included Carrigaline, Adare, Ballymacarbery, and Bishopstown and the Section (B) teams were Ballyduff, Clonmel Commercials, Newmarket and Naomh Fionnbarra. Pat Quill, President of Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association and Brian Enright Chairperson of Cork Ladies Football Board visited the club and they expressed delight at the high level of play exhibited by the teams involved. Bishopstown had a 2 goal victory in their first game against Carrigaline on a score line of 2-3 to 0-3. Their second game against Adare was a very close affair with two late goals deciding the issue in Bishopstown’s favour on a score line of 4-2 to 2-3. The final game of the league section was high scoring with Bishopstown coming out winners scoring 4-5 to 2-3 against Ballymacarbery. A strong panel was the key to gaining these victories with all girls playing their part to secure the teams place in the final. Naomh Fionnbarra qualified for the final from section (B) after three excellent victories in their league section. The final scheduled for 5.30pm started on time, primarily due to the teams’ cooperation and Bridie O’Connell of Cork Ladies Football’s diligent work during the day ensuring events ran smoothly. Naomh Fionnbarra played excellent football to dominate the first half leading on a score line of 6 points to 1. Ashling Dennehy scored the point four minutes before the interval. Even though Bishopstown turned to play with the breeze it looked a daunting task in the second half. Words of wisdom at half time seemed to work as Bishopstown gained dominance in possession but scores proved difficult to gain as Naomh Fionnbarra defended strongly. Roisin Hynes steadied the team with an excellent point after eight minutes. The team fought for every ball and three converted frees by Laura O’Neill left just 1 point in it entering the final minutes. A long delivery from Ashling Dennehy into the right corner forward position was gathered by Laurene Buckley. She quickly transferred to Eirne Ni Dheasmhúnaigh in the centre, who unleashed an unstoppable shot to the net. This put Bishopstown in front by 2 points with time almost up. Naomh Fionnbarra launched a final attack but the Bishopstown back covered well to relieve the pressure to hold on for a 1-5 to 0-6 victory as the final whistle sounded. A big thanks to the many volunteers that helped organise the smooth running of the competition. Our under 16 girls qualified for a Mid Cork semi final against Ballincollig after victories over Passage, Grenagh and Ballyphehane in the league section of the competition. After a good run in the under 12 league recording six wins and one loss our girls qualified for their first Mid Cork semi-final. In the semi-final they lost out to Carrigaline by a single point in a hard fought and entertaining match. Their year is far from over as now they can look forward to a county quarter final in early September. Recently our under 10 girls ran out winners in an exciting high scoring match with Ballyphehane, a return match planned after the school holidays. They now look forward to the annual Mid Cork under 10 blitz in late August. Under 10, 12 and 14 training will recommence in September. Under 10’s Sunday@ 5pm and U12 & U14 Sunday @ 6pm in GAA club.

Mid-Cork Cup Final Bishopstown 4-5 Nemo Rangers 4-4
Wed May 19th 2010 at Trabeg

U 14 ladies Mid-Cork Champions

Bishopstown under 14 Ladies football team captured their first Mid Cork Cup on Wednesday 19th of May 2010, with a hard fought 1 point win over Nemo Rangers at Trabeg. Bishopstown started well with and early point by Eirne Ni Dheasmhúnaigh, which was followed by a quick goal by Sarah O’Sullivan. Nemo replied with a fine point and levelled after 13 minutes with a well taken goal. Bishopstown responded with a cracking goal from Francesca Panzavachia. Nemo added another point from a free before Bishopstown claimed their third goal through Laurene Buckley. Nemo completed the first half scoring with a goal from long range on the stroke of half time, leaving Bishopstown ahead on a score line of 3-1 to 2-2. The second half saw Nemo start stronger with a point from the throw in. After an exchange of points Nemo struck for a crucial goal and then lead with 9 minutes to go to the final whistle. Bishopstown responded and gained the upper hand in the possession stakes. The lead was reclaimed with a superbly punched goal by Caoimhe Broderick. Megan Delaney added a point after dashing through from midfield. An insurance point was kicked over from the left wing by Laura O’Neill to put Bishopstown 4 points clear. Nemo again rallied and a late goal in injury time brought the margin down to the bare minimum on a score line of 4-5 to 4-4. From the ensuing kick out Bishopstown regained possession and drove up field as the final whistle sounded, which was greeted with great joy by the large Bishopstown crowd. This was a cracking game with both teams giving their all for the full hour. On the night Bishopstown’s backline was well marshalled by Jessica Kearney and Niamh Stevens in the centre positions with Aoife Dorgan and Cliona Coughlan completing a very reliable full back line. Ellen O’Donovan made a couple of vital interceptions after coming in at corner back. Wing back Kayleigh Flynn played very solid until being forced off with an injury mid way through the second half and on the other wing Emma Richardson thundered into the game particularly in the second half. Midfield partnership of Megan Delaney and Ashling Dennehy covered every inch of the pitch and were ably assisted in this effort by Eirne from centre forward. Wing forwards Suvi Inkinen and Laurene Buckley put in great performances over the hour. The inside line of Laura O’Neill, Francesca Panzavachia and Sarah O’Sullivan worked tirelessly for each other to set up scores. Winning the cup is not just about the final as it took seven matches to reach that stage. The importance of a strong panel was the key to our success this year. It was also an excellent reward for the great effort put in by coaches Marion Bannon and John Kearney in particular since the club was established.
