A last-minute close range free taken by the Ballinhassig keeper that resulted in a goal means that the teams have to do battle another day to decide relegation for the 2012 season. It was a cruel blow to a Town side that improved as the game wore on in the second half aided by a stiff breeze. The half time whistle saw Ballinhassig ahead by 1 point on a scoreline of Town 1-7 Ballinhassig 0-11 with all but one of the Ballinhassig scores coming from play. After six minutes Town were up by 3 points to 1 with Town points by Thomas Murray and Ronan Conway. Then in the 12th minute Town were awarded a penalty and Pa Cronin's shot bounced up off the ground into the Ballinhassig net. Ballinhassig then scored points from play in the 13th and 14th minutes before Pa Cronin scored from a free in the 16th minute. Ballinhassig replied with 3 more from play in the 17th, 20th and 21st minutes. Ronan Conway then scored a fine point from play on 22 minutes. However Ballinhassig took advantage of the wind to fire over 3 long range efforts from play in the 23rd, 25th, 26th minutes. Ian Jones then pointed from play in the 29th minute. Ballinhassig replied with a pointed free in the 29th minute and Thomas Murray did likewise in the 30th minute to leave the sides level. The half concluded with a Ballinhassig point from play in over-time. With the aid of the wind, Town dominated for most of the second half to be up by 5 points after 26 minutes of play. Replacement Brian Murray, who came on for Eoghan McCarthy at the break, followed up a Mark Driscoll point (3 minutes) with a well taken goal after 7 minutes. Thomas Murray scored from a free in the 8th minute and Pa Cronin scored a fine point from play in the 14th minute. Then a mighty run by Ian Jones from mid-field led to a great point by Brian Murray (15 minutes). Ronan Conway then scored from play (20 minutes) to leave the scoreline at Town 2-12 to Ballinhassig 0-14 with the Ballinhassig scores coming in the 1st, 2nd and 20th minutes. Pa Cronin got another from play after 21 minutes and Thomas Murray scored Town's last point from a free after 26 minutes. However, Ballinhassig scored points in the 21st,22nd and 27th minutes to leave 4 between the sides. Another Ballinhassig point came in the 28th minute and it looked like time would run out for them. Unfortunately the Town defence conceded a free in the last minute and the Ballimhassig keeper did what he had to do with a low shot to the bottom right corner of the net. The team played well over all with the defence holding their line despite the pressure. Pa and Ian also gave good performances and up front Ronan Conway and Denis Crowley looked dangerous when they got possession. Team: Ken O'Halloran, Brian Healy, Jamie O'Sullivan, Bert Lane (Diarmuid Lester 53rd minute), Jas Murphy, Shane O'Neill, Mark Driscoll, Ian jones, Pa Cronin, Michael Power, Thomas Murray, Ger McGlackin, Eohan McCarthy(Brain Murray half time), Ronan Conway, Denis Crowley.
The Junior hurlers got back to winning ways on Thursday evening last with a fine win over Passage in the first of a run of 5 upcoming league games. Despite the concession of a barrage of Passage goals in the second half, the Town forwards notched up a tally of 22 points with 2 goals also to win this one. There were fine displays by Eoin Joyce, Paul Dineen, Conor Lutrell, David Driscoll, Aaron McCarthy, Eoin McCarthy, Mark Cogan, Kevin McCarthy, Will Nunan and Rodger Ryan. More matches to come in the next 2 weeks. Please support.
The senior hurlers are out of this year's championship after this encounter and now face either Cloyne or Ballinhasig in a relegation play off. These two sides battle it out next Saturday in Pairc Ui Rinn at 7.15 p.m. At half-time Town led by 6 points to 5 but the lead should have been greater as we enjoyed more possesion and were guilty of a number of wides that proved decisive. It took Bride Rovers until the 14th minute to register their first score by which time Town had 4 points on the board, all from play, scored by Ronan Conway(1st minute) Pa Cronin(3rd minute), Thomas Murray(4th minute) and Eoghan McCarthy(13th minute). Michael Power added another point from play in the 20th minute to make it 5 points to 2. Bride then scored twice in the 22nd and 25th minutes. Bride were awarded a penalty in the 25th minute which Ken O'Halloran saved bravely. Michael Power added another point from play in the 26th minute. A final point by an improving Bride Rovers just before the break left the minimum between the teams. In that first half Town had the better of affairs but the forwards were not winning enough of the ball being delivered to them. It was unfortunate Eoghan McCarthy had to leave the field injured in the 25th minute as he was gaining quite a bit of possession at wing forward. In general, the Bride defenders were superior under the high ball and perhaps Town did not vary the type of ball to the forwards enough. The second half resumed with a Pa Cronin point from a 65 in the 1st minute. In the next 7 minutes Town hit 5 wides and Bride Rovers were getting stronger as time went by. They scored their first goal in the 9th minute having hit points in the 2nd and 5th minutes The score now was Bride Rovers 1-7 Town 0-7. Then disaster struck when another goal was conceded in the 15th minute to leave two goals in it. The team began to noticeably tire and lose shape at that stage but Thomas Murray, who had moved out from the full-forward line, came into it more aided by Denis Crowley who tried his utmost winning a number of good possessions. A chance opened up as he raced for goal but opted to pass to his left for Ronan Conway, instead of going for a score. Unfortunately signals seemed to be crossed and the opportunity was gone. Town managed 3 more points by Pa Cronin(20th minute), Thomas Murray (25th minute free) and another by Thomas from play in the 29th minute. Meanwhile, Bride Rovers scored 3 points of their own in the 16th, 21st and 28th minutes. A goal would have been necessary to salvage anything from the game but a Paul O'Donoghue effort hit the side netting and an attempt by Thomas Murray from a long range free towards the end were both unsuccessful. Overall the defence played quite well with the fullback line handling their opponents for the most part. Jamie, Ian and Bert had good games as had Paul Honohan particularly in the second half when a comeback was needed. Shane O'Neill and Pa Cronin had good firts halfs but Town just didn't have enough in the tank in the last 15 minutes to make any impression on the lead bride Rovers had amassed. The wides in the first half and in the first 10 minutes of the second half proved to be costly in the end. Team Ken O'Halloran, Bert Lane, Jamie O'Sullivan, Ian Jones, David Hickey (Mark Driscoll), Shane O'Neill, Paul Honohan, Pa Cronin, Jas Murphy(Brian Coffey), Ronan Conway, Denis Crowley, Michael Power, Eoghan McCarthy(Paul O'Donoghue), Brian Murray(Diarmuid Lester), Thomas Murray.
After a thrilling encounter these teams will have to meet again to decide which advances to the next round to meet Blackrock while the other faces a relegation battle against Cloyne or Ballinhassig. There was a significant improvement in the scoring department compared with last week's ancounter v Killeagh with Denis Crowley, Pa Cronin, Michael Power, Thomas Murray, Eoghan McCarthy and Ronan Conway all getting on the scoresheet including a timely goal fashioned by Crowley in the extra-time period when Bride were 3 ahead. With a lead of 4 points towards the finish of ordinary time a victory looked probable for Town, despite the concession of 2 first half goals. However, Bride Rovers fought back well to draw the game with a series of late scores. The first period of extra-time saw Town going behind by 3 before the Crowley goal and it took 2 points by Pa Cronin and Ronan Conway in the second period of extra-time to ensure that there would be a replay. Team: Ken O'Halloran, Bert Lane, Shane O'Neill, Ian Jones, David Hickey, Paul Honohan, Jamie O'Sullivan, Jas Murphy, Pa Cronin (0-8), Ronan Conway (0-4), Michael Power (0-1), Eoghan McCarthy(0-2), Brian Murray, Denis Crowley (1-1) and Thomas Murray (0-2 frees).
A fine display by the minors at Ballincollig resulted in a well deserved win and advancement to the next round of the championship. Two first half goals scored by David O'Sullivan, the first in the 5th minute with a low shot to the corner and the second in the 21st minute from an overhead pull following an excellent sideline cut by David O'Brien. The other first half scores came from an opener by midfielder Mark O'Connell in the second minute, a free by David O'Sullivan after 7 minutes, points by Liam Buckley in the 12th and 17th minutes, a David O'Brien free in the 23rd minute. and points by Shane Lordan after 27 minutes and David O'Sullivan in the 29th minute. Na Piarsaigh found scores difficult to come by even though they had a number of goal chances which were dealt with well by the rearguard action of Conor Dorman, Ian Cassidy, Quin McIlhenney and goalkeeper Billy McConville. The score at the break was Town 2-7 Na Piarsaigh 0-5. The trend continued in the second half and 2 more goals were scored by Colin McCarthy in the 44th minute and Liam Buckley a minute later. Colin McCarthy notched 2 more points in the 32nd and 56th minutes and further points were scored by David O'Sullivan in the 42nd minute and Shane Lordan in the 54th minute. A final point was taken in the 59th minute. Na Piarsaigh only managed 2 points during the half despite trying their best to the end. There were excellent displays all round with David O'Brien, David O'Sullvan, Luke McAuliffe, Ian Cassidy, Billy McConville, Liam Buckley. Mark O'Connell, Colin McCarthy, Shane Lordan, Stephen Lynch and Colm Murphy producing solid displays.
A 5 point losing margin at the end of this game was the outcome, due mainly to a litany of misses from play and frees that cost us dearly at the conclusion of a disappointing performance. The scoreline at half-time read Town 0-7 Killeagh 0-9 and the prospect of a Town win was good as the gap could have been greater with the highlight of the half being a point blank save by goal keeper Ken O'Halloran in the 12th minute. The Town backs were playing well with Shane O'Neill, Ian Jones, Paul Honohan, and David Hickey dominant for most of the half. Jas Murphy and Pa Cronin started well at midfield but it was from there up that things just didn't seem to click with the forwards having a tough time of it to make any great impression. The scores in the first half came from Thomas Murray in the 1st, 11th, 26th and 30th minutes, Pa Cronin in the 10th minute, Denis Crowley in the 16th minute and Brian Murray in the 28th minute. The second half produced wide after wide and Town managed just 2 points in that period scored by Ronan Conway in the 8th minute and Michael Power in the 10th minute. Denis Crowley tried his best to get things going with some strong runs at goal but none resulted in scores when badly needed. Thomas Murray had a late shot from distance saved by the keeper and time had run out. The next game is against Bride Rovers on Sat July 16th at sars GAA pitch in Riverstown. throw-in at 7.30 p.m. Team: Ken O'Halloran, Bert Lane, Shane O'Neill, Ian Jones, David Hickey(Jamie O'Sullivan), Paul Honohan, Diarmuid Lester, Jas Murphy, Pa Cronin, Ronan Conway, Michael Power, Eoghan McCarthy(Brian Coffey), Brian Murray, Denis Crowley and Thomas Murray
A last minute point by Killeagh resulted in a draw after a closely fought affair in the senior hurling league played at Bishopstown. With Pa Cronin on the injured list and missing a number of others due to exams and Junior football championship, the team showed good improvement with Shane O'Neill excelling at full-back and Ronan Conway back to great form at wing forward. Aided by the breeze, Killeagh pulled into a half-time lead of 8 points to 3 with the Town scores coming from Ronan Conway(2) in the 7th and 16th minutes and Mike Power in the 20th minute. A number of goal opportunities were also foiled by good Killeagh defending. Mike O'Neill made a great save from a point blank shot in the 18th minute and he did so again in the second half when keeping out a dangerous dropping ball despite being under strong pressure. The second half saw a gradual improvement in the Town play and there were points by Ronan Conway(5), Thomas Murray(2), Shane O'Neill, Eoin McCarthy and Brian Coffey. Killeagh managed to score 5 second half points with the final one coming in injury time. Other players to catch the eye included Ian Jones, Paul Honohan, Mark Driscoll and Mike Power.

The senior hurlers still await their first victory in the league after this comprehensive loss to Douglas at home. The team was depleted of resources with Colm O'Driscoll, Ken O'Halloran, Shane O'Neill, Michael Power, Paul Honohan, Jamie O'Sullivan, David Hickey, Brian Murray and Diarmuid Lester among those unavailable for selection while Pa Cronin played the first half of a one sided encounter, especially in the second half. The scoreline at the break was Town 0-6 Douglas 1-9 with the goal coming from a 20 metre free in the 21st minute. The town points were scored by Ronan Conway, Pa Cronin and Ger McGlackin, 4 of them from play. The defence was under pressure and good work by Bert Lane and Mike O'Neill in goal saved the day on a few occasions. With the loss of Pa Cronin at half-time there was a noticeable drop off in the team performance despite 2 opportunistic goals taken by Ger McGlackin and Paul O'Donoghue in the 2nd and 4th minutes of the half. Ronan Conway added a point in the 5th minute to leave the score at town 2-7 Douglas 1-13. However Douglas proceeded to dominate from then on and town failed to add to the score tally. With the return of absent players in the near future an improvement in performance should follow. Team: Mike O'Neill, Conor Lutrell, Bert Lane, Ian Jones, James Murphy, Denis Crowley, Mark Driscoll, Pa cronin and Brian Coffey, Thomas Murray, Ronan Conway, Ger McGlackin, Eoin Joyce, Paul O'Donoghue and Tim Bogue.
Played under lights at CIT grounds this league opener ended in defeat with Blackrock proving to be stronger in vital areas notching two opportunistic first half goals after Town had made a good start with a series of points by Thomas Murray(5), Ronan Conway(2)and a fine Mark Driscoll score from half back. Blackrock scored 4 points to leave the score at 2-4 to 0-8 in favour of Blackrock. Two second half points by Thomas Murray and one from Ronan Conway completed the Town scoring while Blackrock scored 8 second half points. It was great to see Ronan Conway back in action and he showed some fine touches scoring 3 points. Team: Mike O'Neill, Stephen Power, Denis Crowley, Conor Lutrell, Shane Fitzgerald, David Hickey, Mark Driscoll, Ian Jones and Eoin Joyce, Ger McGlackin, Brian Murray, Thomas Murray, Jas Murphy, Ronan Conway and Brian Coffey
