August 17th Senior Championship Town 0-11 CIT 0-19 This round 4 encounter proved to be a bridge too far for the senior hurlers when a superior CIT side outgunned them in the second half with a powerful display of hurling. There was not much between the sides at the break with CIT holding a slender one point lead at 8 points to 7. The teams were level for most of the half, the Town points coming from Mike Power(1st min), Brian Murray(2nd min), Ger McGlackin(8th min), Pa Cronin(14th min free), Shane O'Neill(23rd min monster), Mike Power (27th min), and Thomas Murray(30th min from an acute angle). Shane O'Neill seemed to be holding up well despite his recent injury and over all the team were holding their own. James Murphy pulled up with an injury half way through, however, and had to be replaced by Ian Jones. The defence was doing well with Kevin McCarthy in particular doing fine work on the wing. Mike O'Neill in goal made a spectacular save in the 13th minute and he was to repeat the action twice in the second half with a man of the match performance. The second half proved to be a different matter with CIT scoring 5 points in succession before Brian Murray scored in the 14th minute. Thomas Murray and Mike Power followed with points in the 17th and 25th minutes but CIT produced a string of points in the last quarter to put the game beyond reach. Mike O'Neill's saves in the 12th and 15th minutes were top drawer and he is responsible for the margin at the end being substantially less than it could have been. Town were limited in options especially when Shane O'Neill had to leave the field injured although David Hickey did his utmost to fill the breach when moved to centre-back. The forward line just could not win enough possession and were generally snuffed out by a tight defence throughout. There was a late penalty call when Paul O'Donoghue was taken down in the square but it did not materialise and Denis Crowley also did his best to break through on a few occasions but there was no passage to goal opening up for him. Commiserations to all the squad and backroom team, Donal, Leo, John, Dave and Kevin. The effort put in deserved more but it was not to be this year. Team Mike O'Niell, Colm O'Driscoll, Bert Lane, Conor Lutrell, Kevin McCarthy, Shane O'Neill(Paul O'Donoghue), Eoin Byrne, James Murphy(Ian Jones), Thomas Murray, Mike Power, Pa Cronin, Ger McGlackin, Brian Murray, Denis Crowley and David Hickey. |
June 28th Minor Premier League Town 5-9 Na Piarsaigh 3-20 The minors produced a good performance in this league encounter and but for the concession of a late goal the result would have been much closer. This was a boost after the loss to the same oppostiion last week in the non-exam league final. There were good displays all round with Brian Murray netting three times and Seamus Glynn also goaling in the second half. Shane Lordan, Diarmuid Leaster, Diarmuid O'Brien and Matthew Kelleher also shone throughout. Mention should be made of Diarmuid and Brian on their displays during the week for Cork minors in a thrilling drawn match. Unfortunately Roger Ryan had to cry off due to injury but Diarmuid gave a good account of himself at corner back and excelled when he followed his man to centre-field in the second half winning somevital ball at crucial stages. Brian came on at the break and scored a point with his first possession. He was a threat to the Waterford full-back line for that second half and it will be a surprise if both don't feature in the eagerly awaited replay. |
June 24th Senior League Town 2-10 Carrigtohill 1-12 Despite a number of absentees, the lads who lined out against Carrigtohill this evening did justice to themselves and came home with a deserved one point victory. Two first half goals scored by Jamie O'Sullivan following a great run through the middle and Pa Cronin with a fierce shot from an acute angle to the right hand side of goal paved the way for this win. After 19 minutes the score was 0-4 to 0-3 in our favour with the points coming from Pa Cronin(3) and Thomas Murray. Jamie's goal
on 23 minutes was followed by another point by Thomas and Pa's cracker in the 30th minute. The score at the break was Town 2-5 Carrigtohill 0-5. Jamie was replaced by Aaron McCarthy at half-time and the team was rearranged substantially as a result with Pa going to midfield and Thomas moving to corner-forward. Carrigtohill came more into it and by the 10th minute of the half they had scored 1-3 to a single point by Pa Cronin. There was now only a point between the sides. Pa scored another in the 11th minute but Carrig replied with 3 more points. David Hickey then scored a beauty and the score was 2-8 to 1-11, a draw looking likely. However, the lads finished well with two late points by Pa and Thomas in the 27th and 28th minutes. Carrig got the last score of the game with a free in the 29th minute but we held out for a great win. Team: Mike O'Neill, Mark Driscoll, Bert Lane, Conor Lutrell, Kevin McCarthy, Shane O'Neill, Terence O'Donoghue, Thomas Murray(0-3) and Jamie O'Sullivan(1-0), Colin Jones, David Hickey(0-1), Ger McGlackin, Brian Coffey, Paul O'Donoghue, and Pa Cronin(1-6). Subs used: Aaron McCarthy for Jamie O'Sullivan |
June 7th Senior Championship Town 3-11 Cloyne 2-13
What a win! This encounter went to extra time with Town missing a last minute chance to take the spoils in ordinary time, Brian Murray's shot for goal being saved by Donal Og Cusack and the final whistle following immediately on the puck out. The team showed tremenduous resilience in the extra time and a wonderful pass from Thomas Murray on the left wing to Pa Cronin on the edge of the square resulted in Pa kicking a match winning goal to the net. There were great scenes of celebration on the final whistle as this was a momentous occasion for hurling in the club. Cloyne were gunning for revenge after last years match and started as favourites with the pundits. Town were short Paul Honohan, Ian Jones and Jamie O'Sullivan but played with great intent in the first half against a lack lustre Cloyne. After 4 minutes Pa Cronin stepped up to take a penalty following an indiscretion by the Cloyne defence and his effort was just over the bar to open the scoring. Ger McGlackin scored from play in the 8th minute and Mike Power put over two beauties in the 14th and 18th minutes. Cloyne did not score until the 17th minute from a free while David Hickey extended the Town lead with a 5th point also from play. Concentration slipped at this stage and Town conceded three pointed frees and a point from play to leave the scores level at the break at 5 points each. There were some nasty incidents in that first half with David Hickey being booked for an altercation following which revenge was clearly extracted when he was struck off the ball in view of the referee while on the ground. However, the Cloyne player involved was not sent off to the dismay of spectators in attendance. The second half resumed with another penalty awarded to Town after 2 minutes and Pa duly despatched the shot to the net. Mike Power added another point after 8 minutes followed by another from Pa after 12 minutes and a Denis Crowley special in the 10th minute which was a brilliantly directed low shot that gave the keeper no chance. Cloyne pointed from a free after 6 minutes and then goaled on 12 minutes, following with a pointed free a minute later. Pa Cronin scored a point from a feee in the 13th minute and it was not until the 24th minute that Cloyne scored a point from a 65. Pa replied in the 26th minute with another point from a free with Cloyne doing likewise in the 27th minute. Then Cloyne tied the game up in the 30th minute with a rocket from a 21 metre free that hit the top right corner of the Town net. This score brought the sides level and time was up following Brian Murray's unsuccessful attempt on goal. Brian should not be faulted as a goal was on but a point may have won the game in ordinary time, however for the youngest of the starting 15 in his Leavong Cert year, he had a fine debut. The latter stages of the half were marked by a number of sending offs - Ken O'Halloran and Bert Lane and the Cloyne corner back those involved. Mike O'Neill came on in goal and Jas Murphy went off as a result and Mike did really well for the remainder of the game. It was at this stage with Twon a man down that Shane O'Neill shone like a beacon with some impeccable hurling right to the end of extra time. The first period of extra time saw a rearranged Town side with Kevin McCarthy coming back on at full back having been replaced by Roger Ryan in the second half of normal time. The sides exchanged points with Pa Cronin on the mark in the 9th minute from play, Town having missed a couple of long range frees in the interim. Paul o'Donoghue and Colin Jones were on for the extra time with a tiring Ger McGlackin going off having played well. In the second period Shane O'Neill totally dominated at centre-back. With the resulting supply of ball Denis Crowley pointed in the first minute. However Cloyne were putting on the pressure and scored three points in the 2nd, 5th and 6th minutes to go 2 points ahead 2-13 to 2-11. Then Thomas Murray's exquisite pass found the excellent Pa Cronin and he finished to the net past a hapless Donal Og. The last moments were nail biting with some resolute defending. Denis crowley won a great ball on the wing in those final moments and this epitomised the never-say-die attitude of this great team effort. Well done to Donal and the lads on a great day for our club. Team: Ken O 'Halloran, Colm O'Driscoll, Bert Lane, Conor Lutrell, Eoin Byrne, Shane O'Neill, Kevin McCarthy, Thomas Murray and Dave Hickey(0-1), Mike Power(0-3), Brian Murray, Ger McGlackin(0-1), Denis Crowley(1-1), Jas Murphy, and Pa Cronin(2-5). Subs used: Mike O'Neill, Roger Ryan, Paul O'Donoghue, Colin Jones |
May 28th SHL Town 4-13 Douglas 1-13 This performance demonstrated further improvement and was marked by the welcome return of Pa Cronin to action after a lengthy absence due to injury. Pa showed no ill effects and scored 2-6 before making way for Eoin McCarthy 10 minutes into the second half. Town were well on top from the start with points by a lively Mike Power(4) and Brian Murray(1) along with a second goal by Niall Feehily, who replaced the injured Paul O'Donoghue and Pa Cronin's 1-5 to leave the score at 2-10 to 0-8 at the break. Town made three more subs in the second half with Terence O'Donoghue replacing Rodger Ryan, Aaron McCarthy replacing Mike Power and Stephen Power coming on for Colm O'Driscoll. Douglas began to gain more possession but could not get the scores needed to make an impression due to fine defence by the back line and a number of marvellous saves by Mike O'Neill. The second half goals came from a deft flick by Pa Cronin(2 mins) and a second by Niall Feehily(30 mins). Points came from Brian Murray(1 min), Pa(9 mins), and Thomas Murray(29 mins). Stand out players included Bert Lane, David Hickey, Thomas and Brian Murray, Mike O'Neill, Colin Jones, Pa Cronin, Eoin Byrne, and Denis Crowley. Roll on championship duel. Team: Mike O'Neill, Colm O'Driscoll, Bert Lane, Diarmuid Lester, Eoin Byrne, David Hickey, Chris O'Neill, Thomas Murray, Rodger Ryan, Michael Power, Colin Jones, Brian Murray, Denis Crowley, Paul O'Donoghue and Pa Cronin |
May 21st SHL Town 0-11 Blarney 0-11 This league encounter ended in a draw with a point by Thomas Murray levelling matters in the final minute. Town, missing a number of players, coped well from the start and it wasn't until the final minutes of the first half that Blarney fired over three unanswered points to leave the score at Town 0-4 Blarney 0-9 at the break. The Town scores came from James Murphy (4 min.), Michael Power (8 min.), Thomas Murray (17 min.) all from play and a pointed free by Thomas in the 19th minute. There were also a number of wides during the half from difficult angles. Town made some alterations for the second half and there was a marked improvement in the performance. Blarney only managed 2 points in total, in the 42nd and 50th minutes while Town had points from Paul Honohan(31st min), Ger McGlackin(33rd min), Paul Honohan (free, 40th min), Ger McGlackin(51st min), Thomas Murray (free, 52nd min), Paul O'Donoghue(53rd min) and Thoams Murray(60th min). Town had several wides and a chance that was pointed by Paul O'Donoghue when a goal was on following a deft pass from Denis Crowley. Denis had replaced Chris O'Neill at the break and Paul Honohan suffered a hand injury and was replaced by Terence O'Donoghue. Team: Ken O'Halloran, Roger Ryan, Bert Lane, Conor Lutrell, Eoin Byrne, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Honohan, David Hickey, Chris O'Neill, Michael Power, James Murphy, Ger McGlackin, Brian Murray, Paul O'Donoghue and Thomas Murray |
April 26th SHL Town 3-10 Na Piarsaigh 2-16 This proved to be a close fought contest in the end although Na Piarsaigh held the edge throughout and it was 2 Thomas Murray goals from frees towards the end of the first half that cancelled a flurry of Na Piarsaigh points leaving the score Town 2- 6 Na Piarsaigh 1-10 at the break. The points came from Mike Power(5 mins and 16 mins) from play, a pair of Thomas Murray frees(9 and 10 mins), a Ger McGlackin point from play(15 mins), and a Shane Fitzgerald free (20 mins). The second half was much more competitive with good performances from Denis Crowley, Bert Lane, Colin Jones, Conor Lutrell and Kevin McCarthy. A goal from the Town full forward. Ger McGlackin and 2 points each from Shane Fitz and Thomas Murray completed the Town scoring. Considering the absence of so many players this was a good performance with Na piarsaigh just about deserving the win. Team: Ken O'Halloran, Stephen Power, Bert Lane, Conor Luttrell, Eoin Byrne, Kevin McCarthy, Chris O'Neill, Paul Honohan, Shane Fitzgerald, Mike Power, Denis Crowley, Colin Jones, Eoin McCann, Ger McGlackin, Thomas Murray. |
