Junior hurlers defeat Ballinhassig in McCurtin cup

Action from Senior Hurling Championship V Blackrock
Senior Championship Bishopstown 1-10 Newtown 0-17

Played at the new Mallow Sports facility, Town were defeated in the first round of this year's competition by a slicker Newtown side who just about deserved the win on the day. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, Bishopstown held their own against last year's finalists and went in at the break holding a one point lead on a scoreline of 6 to 5. Scores were scarce with Newtown in particular hitting the post a number of times and shooting some wides also. Shane O'Neill got the first score with a long range free followed by a point from play by James Murphy. Further scores by Pa Cronin from frees and points by Killian Coughlan and Ian Jones provided the slender lead at half-time. However, with the wind at their backs, Newtown started well in the second period and soon the score was 0-12 to 0-6 in their favour. A pointed free by Pa Cronin after 13 minutes started a comeback. This was followed by a point by Kevin O'Driscoll. Newtown were scoring points themselves and it wasn't until a great goal by Michael Power hauled the deficit back and set up an exciting finish. Denis Crowley had a part to play in that score and was unlucky on a number of occasions not to hit the net. Pa Cronin scored 2 more points but by then Newtown had a enough of an advantage to see them through. Despite the best efforts of Paul Honohan at wing back, especially in the last 15 minutes, it was to be Newtown's day.The next round for the lads will be against either Blackrock or Erins Own and on this performance they can be confident of doing well.
Minor News

This competition is now well under way with a defeat to Douglas marking the commencement of activities. This was followed by a win against Brain Dillons on a scoreline of 2-18 to 3-12 and a loss to Mayfield. The lads were beaten by Valley Rovers in their most recent outing despite an outstanding display by Brian Murray with a tally of 10 points from play which must rank as one of the best individual scoring performances in quite a long time. The next game saw another defeat to Donoughmore but the important point to note is that this competition is giving meaningful hurling to players who would otherwise be inactive. Congratulations to Shane Dunne who made his Junior debut in the championship against Douglas. Shane acquitted himself very well on the night.
The premier league gets under way again now that the exams are coming to an end with games against Blackrock and Douglas in July coming up. There is a challenge match against Sliabh Rua on June 17th to get the team going again in anticipation of a good run in the league and championship.
Junior Hurling
The junior hurlers have made an impressive start to the league campaign with 4 wins out of 5 so far. The most recent display this week saw them produce another victory against Courcey Rovers. There is a nice balanced look about this team with David Collins anchoring the centre of defence and Donal O'Mahony pulling the trigger up front. Paul Dineen gave a fine display of neat corner back hurling and Tim Bogue and Colin Jones gave a sterling hour at mid-field. The championship date with Mayfield is approaching (June 5th) and in the meantime you can catch another home league game against Ballinora on May 28th next at 7:30 p.m.
Senior Championship Town 1-10 Blackrock 3-9
Goals either side of half-time proved to be the downfall of our seniors this afternoon in Pairc Ui Chaoimh. Playing against a strong breeze, the lads were doing well in a low scoring affair with points from Pa Cronin (3 mins), Denis Crowley (16 mins), James Murphy(20 mins) and Michael Power(29 mins). Blackrock had only managed 3 points in the same period but then struck for a well taken goal when Brian O'Keefe rounded his man easily and shot past Ken. It still looked promising for the second half due to the fact that Town would have a strong breeze in their favour. It was not to be however, and Blackrock started with a bang and a sense of purpose that overwhelmed us in the first 15 minutes of that second period. Six minutes into the half, the score was Blackrock 2-6 Town 0-4 following the concession of another goal from a defensive error and 3 points in quick succession. A point by Pa Cronin in the 40th minute was followed by another Blackrock goal after another mix-up. From here on we were chasing the game and despite a great goal by Thomas Murray and points by Pa (2), Shane O'Neill, Ronan Conway, Timmy Creed and Denis Crowley, the comeback was too little and too late. Overall Blackrock showed much more hunger for victory in the second half and the experience of their older players told to a great extent when it mattered. This result means that the team will now compete in a group to maintain senior status for the coming year.
Junior Hurling League May 28th
Town 5-17 Ballinora 2-7

The Juniors continued their winning streak with a victory over Ballinora at home this evening. Two goals from Toddy Cuthbert in either half and a beauty scored by Robert McDonnell along with some fine points by Donal O'Mahony and a spectacular effort by Brian Healy in the second half contributed to this impressive win. Robert Mawe had a good hour between the posts and was unlucky for one of the Ballinora goals in that second half. Town were on top throughout and were well up to a vain effort by Ballinora to reduce the arrears with 2 second half goals. Conor O'Neill, Paul O'Donoghue and Paul Dineen formed a formidable full-back line with Ken Murphy and David Collins manning the half back berths. Brian Healy added punch to centre-field ably assisted by Tim Bogue. Robert McDonnell displayed his skill and speed on numerous occasions with Niall Feehely, Donal O'Mahony, Glenn O'Callaghan and Toddy doing the business up front along side him. Bert Lane made a reappearance after a recent injury and also performed well. Keep it up lads!

Town 2-8 Mayfield 4-15

Town got off to a flying start in this one with Niall Feehely on fire, scoring two goals in the first few minutes. The first goal was a fine solo effort and the second was well taken following a sweet pass from Robert McDonnell. In fact, it was Niall and Robert who were the chief scorers throughout the game. Despite the great start, Mayfield gradually got to grips with the game and by half-time the score was Town 2-5 Mayfield 1-7. In the early part of the second period, Mayfield came alive with two more goals from their centre-forward who went on to score a third towards the end. Town fought back bravely but it was not to be as we failed to get enough ball to the threatening Niall Feehely to make an impression. The final scoreline does not reflect the game fairly and considering that a number of players have left our shores for the summer coupled with the loss of Donal O'Mahony through injury, this was a closely contested encounter until the last 10 minutes or so. The lads now face Douglas next Tuesday in the back door so best of luck to all concerned. Team: Pat Murphy, Conor O'Neill, Paul O'Donoghue, Paul Dineen, David Collins (Brian Murphy), Bert Lane, Ken Murphy, Brian Healy, Tim Bogue, Shane Fitzgerald(Brian Cuthbert), Glenn O'Callaghan, Robert McDonnell, Eoghan McCarthy, Niall Feehely, Toddy Cuthbert.
Junior Hurling Championship June 10th
Town 0-7 Douglas 0-8

Despite a spirited and much improved second half display, the Juniors made their exit from this year's championship through a one point loss to Douglas. The first half was a low scoring affair leaving the half time tally at 3 points each. Town had the aid of a strong breeze for that first half but failed to to make much impact up front. The defence had to withstand several close calls and did so admirably, the forward line did not really function with any authority with the only contributions being points from Niall Feehely and Donal O'Mahony. Brian Murphy had to retire early with a hamstring injury and he was followed temporarily by Tim Bogue. The second half was much better with Brian Healy and Dave Collins particularly impressive. However it took a wonder save from Pat Murphy to keep Douglas at bay. A period of bad referreeing decisions culminated with Niall Feehely being awarded a free when advantage would have yielded a goal. Despite the strong wind, the teams were level on 7 points each coming towards the end. Then Douglas pulled ahead and a number of attempts to level the match by Donal O'Mahony in particular were to no avail. A last minute 65 from Donal just floated wide and the final whistle blew. There were good displays by second half subs Shane Dunne and Aaron McCarthy who replaced Toddy Cuthbert and Eoghan McCarthy.
Senior Hurling Championship June 13th
Town 0-15 St.Catherine's 0-8

The seniors have maintained their status for another season with a winning display at Watergrasshill in a match that threatened to boil over on a number of occasions and involved a share of yellow cards and one red for a St.Catherine's defender towards the end. The first half saw St.Catherine's pummel the Town defence with long balls but the full-back line of Ian Jones, Jamie O'Sulivan and Colm O'Driscoll stood up well to the task. The highlights of that first half were a well taken Paul Honohan point following a fine run and a Shane O'Neill free from 80 yards. Shane was in sparkling form throughout and dominated proceedings from the centre-back posiiton. Timmy Creed had one of his best ever displays at wing back. The score at the break was 0-7 to 0-4 in favour of the Town. On the resumption there were a number of holdups as the referee, Ger Harrington(Carrigaline), tried to get to grips with various altercations. However, the lads kept their heads in the end and there were some more well taken points - two in particular from James Murphy and another monster free from Shane. Pa Cronin also came to the fore and scored a number of points from frees and play. Both he and Denis Crowley were on top in the aerial duels and Kevin McCarthy chipped in with a nice point from full-forward. Killian Coughlan was eventually replaced by Paul O'Donoghue after being in the wars on numerous occasions. Bert Lane and Robert McDonnell replaced Leaving Certs Paul Honohan and Ian Jones and Ronan Conway came on for the last ten minutes for Niall Feehely. A good question for Bill Sherman's next quiz - Name the Town player who managed to get a yellow card before he even came on!
Junior Hurling League June 16th
Town 2-14 St.Finbarr's 2-8

A sizzling second half contribution from Niall Feehely with 2 goals and 3 points from play led to another comfortable victory in the league for the Juniors at home last Wednesday evening. With Youngie's gigantic puckouts and Donal O'Mahony's incisive runs, Town piled on the pressure in the second half to overcome near rivals the Barrs. Dave Collins had to retire early in that second half with a leg injury and Conor O'Neill manned the centre of defence in his absence. This led to the welcome introduction of Terence O'Donoghue after a long lay off due to injury and he performed quite well. Others to catch the eye were Paul Dineen, Tim Bogue, Shane Dunne, Aaron McCarthy, Rory Fitzgibbon, Kenny Murphy and Robert McDonnell who made some exciting runs producing some fine scores. Well done lads on a great run so far in this league.
Minor A Hurling Championship July 3rd
Town 2-7 Na Piarsaigh 2-10

A tremenduous display from these lads just failed to produce a win at home in the hurling championship last Thursday evening. Despite conceding two early goals, the boys demonstrated a never say die attitude that is a credit to all concerned and could easily have yielded a draw if not victory on the night. Into the closing stages and in arrears by 4 points, the irrepressible Mark Driscoll stepped up to take a 30 metre free and cooly dispatched it to the Piarsaigh net with a rocket of a shot. Another free was awarded shortly afterwards to the Town but the decision was reversed due to a silly incident resulting in a sending off after the free had been given. The impetus was gone and Na Piarsaigh went on to win by a goal. However, this was a great display and in particular the performances of Noel Murphy, Chris Bannon, Brian Dooley, Mark Drsicoll and John McGlaughlin were notable. It was great to see the younger players doing their thing and it bodes well for the future.
Junior Hurling McCurtin Cup Aug 7th
Town 0-14 Ballinhassig 2-7

Good displays by David Driscoll, scorer of some beauties from the wing, Paul Dineen, Donal O'Mahony, Robert McDonnell, Bert Lane, Mark Cogan, Brian O'Callaghan, Conor Luttrell and Kenny Murphy ensured this victory.
