Fielding an understrength side, this was never going to be an easy affair and so it proved. Bishopstown's inability to convert good possession into scores was the main reason for defeat today. Despite a dreadful start with the concession of a goal and 2 points, Town were doing well at mid-field and had an equal share of the ball. The early loss of Shane Murphy at full-back was another setback but the lads rallied well afterwards until close to the end when Clon scored 4 points to finish with a 7 point winning margin. It was into the 13th minute before Brian Healy registered the first point of the game for Town. This was followed by points by Robert Honohan, Eoin Ryan and Paul Honohan. This left the score at half-time at 1-5 to 0-4. The scores were very scarce in the second period and with less than 10 minutes left it was Clon 1-6 Town 0-6, Bishopstown having been denied a goal by a last second intervention by the Clon defence. Clonakilty finished stronger, however, and scored 4 more points without reply in those last minutes to leave the issue beyond doubt. Considering that there was only a goal between the teams for most of the second half, the fact that a number of kickable frees and point scoring opportunities were missed shows that this game was 'there for the taking'. The next challenge is to maintain senior status for the coming year. Well done to the players and mentors for doing the best they could under the circumstances. |
A fine second half display after a shaky start which saw St.Finbarrs score 5 points without reply, to claw back a first-half Bishopstown advantage of 4 points, resulted in a fine victory and advancement to the next round of the competition. The Town can be proud of a workmanlike, team effort, the highlight of which must be two wonderful penalty saves by Cian Duggan either side of half-time. The keeper also managed to save another point blank effort late on only to see the rebound find the net despite a valiant attempt to prevent a goal. Town responded by finishing with a goal of their own by Brian Ardley to put the game out of reach when the Barrs keeper failed to keep the shot out. Mention must also be made of the point scoring of Paul Honohan at vital stages aided and abetted by some lovely scores by John Egan from the right corner. The tactic of playing the two aforementioned up front and withdrawing Michael O'Neill to mid-field certainly paid dividends and every time Honohan got possession there was only one thing on the agenda. This produced a wonderful goal in the second half by virtue of an unstoppable Honohan strike. This was a team effort though and there were also great displays by Peter Clifford at full-back aided by Cian O Deasunaigh and Stephen McCarthy in a vigialnt defence. Michael O'Neill was ably assisted by Ned Carr in mid-field and there were fine contributions from Diarmuid Vaughan Brian Ardley, Kevin Divane and the very industrious Brian Coffey who distributed great ball throughout. Well done to the lads and their mentors. |
The senior footballers succeeded in maintaining their status with a fine win over Bantry in Inchegeelagh on Sunday last. This was one of the best performances the lads have produced in some time with the younger members of the team in particular rising to the occasion. Playing against a stiff wind in the first half, we got off to a great start with 4 points without reply as a result of a dominance in midfield and in the half-back line. Paul Honohan was the chief tormentor of a beleagured Bantry defence and he scored three beautiful points that belied his age and experience. Brian Healy was on top form also, scoring three points with Pa Cronin and Noel O'Donovan contributing the last of a first half tally of 8 points. Bantry were not out of it completely and succeeded in taking some gift wrapped scores that resulted from poor decision making in our defence. We nearly paid the price at one stage with Ken O'Halloran saving a certain goal with a fine reflex action to concede a 45. In the second half there was a serious leg injury to a Bantry player that led to a long stoppage. We wish him a speedy recovery. On the resumption, it transpired that the break in play did not affect the concentration levels too much and further points from Brian Healy, Alan Coomey, Robert Honohan and Jack O'Shea gave us a comfortable cushion at the end. It would be difficult to pick out a man of the match as all 15 contributed handsomely. James Murphy was on top of his game at wing-back and he was joined by Alan O'Connor and Timmy Creed in a formidable half-back line. Shane Murphy at full-back had two able lieutenants in Ian Jones and Noel O'Donovan. Jamie O'Sullivan had a storming hour on no less than Graham Canty and succeeded in limiting his influence on matters while Fiachra O Deasmhunaigh did not let the side down and battled to the end. Paul was the star of the half-forward line but Pa Cronin did some great work in the first half, in particualar, and Robert Honohan also had his moments throughout proceedings. Brian Healy gave a master class of corner-forward play and Jack O'Shea and Alan Coomey also proved to be a handful for the Bantry defence. Special thanks to Sean O'Shea and his team for keeping things going for the past few weeks while this fixture was awaited anxiously by all at the club. We can now look forward to 2009 with confidence as we have a nice blend of youth and experience that should lead to further successes. |
This was a game that we should have won after a fighting performance that deserved victory. Leading by 4 points with ten minutes or so left it looked like we would gain a great victory against the odds but a final onslaught from Rathpeacon produced the necessary scores and time ran out on us as we tried in vain to get the equaliser. The first half was keenly fought but produced little in the way of scores from either side and the teams were level at 3 points apiece at the break. Town had the advantage of a strong breeze but we failed to put the scores up when needed. Despite playing against the wind the lads produced a great second half and a goal scored by Gavin Walsh from a clever pass by Shane O'mahony put daylight between the teams. A fine Fiachra O Deasmhunaigh point followed to put us 4 points up. However, we could not maintain the momentum and the injury time played by the referree proved to be decisive as it was during those few minutes that the game was won and lost. No fault could be found with the team on the night as everyone gave their all. Great credit is due to mentors Pat Cuthbert, Kieran O'Grady and Seamus O'Sullivan for bringing the team along to this level despite numerous absences for various reasons. Team: Cian Devine-O'Sullivan (made 2 great first half saves), Shane Hayes, Kevin McCarthy(congrats on the new arrival!), Ronan O Siochru, Niall O'Callaghan, Lutrell, Kieran Bowen, Fiachra O Deasmhunaigh, Brian O'Connell, Gavin Walsh, Shane O'Mahony, Niall Looney, D O'Mahony, Niall Looney, Stephen McCarthy, Denis Murphy |
